SOOP high school and college-aged students will head to NYC for a total immersion in the world of professional theatre! Working with a highly skilled group of theatre artists, students will learn what it takes to mount a brand new (or currently un-produced) musical from the “ground up” in New York. Together with their director, musical director and choreographer, plus an occasional drop-in from the composer and librettist, students will gain the knowledge necessary to navigate this exciting, creative, and often challenging art form. Rehearsals will take place in a working NYC studio, alongside other professionals, with a “tech week” move into a legitimate Off-Off Broadway space for 3 final public performances. Along with our student performers, SOOP professional alum will be invited to audition for some of the adult roles, as well! This is a wonderful way for SOOP to bring our program full circle!

This year’s Project:
SMALL TOWN STORY
A musical about a musical that rocked a community!

Book & Lyrics by Sammy Buck
Music & Lyrics by Brandon James Gwinn

Deep divisions arise in town when it’s announced the annual high school musical will be RENT. As the escalation drives wedges between parents and students- and teachers and neighbors – secrets are uncovered that threaten to tear them apart. SMALL TOWN STORY explores the indelible power of theatre, the inherent dangers of silence and the potential of young people to change the world.
